xrecode II Editor's Review

Convert Audio Files With Ease

XRecode II is a program that enables you to convert an audio file of one format (including MP3, FLV and ASF) to another format - a process known as transcoding. The initially somewhat confusing interface belies the power of this program, allowing users to transcode batches of audio files with ease, automatically carrying out renaming and retagging metadata.

XRecode II also supports audio normalisation, meaning your digital music collection will be consistent in volume across the board. Sound quality of the output files is excellent, and allowing for the fact that audio transcoding or encoding is a CPU-intensive task, it consumed a moderate amount of system resources.

The program is endlessly customisable, with a full range of encoding options (bitrate, sample frequency rate and so on), and additionally a decent range of alternative languages. XRecode II can integrate with the Windows shell, allowing you to transcode audio files from a folder window, without opening the program directly.

Pros: Lightweight. Full range of functionality, with very little chaff. Keyboard shortcuts make work with this program extremely fast and efficient for experienced users.
Cons: Could be improved with CD or DVD burning support. Interface likely to be confusing for new users. The lack of help file doesn’t, er, help.

Conclusion: XRecode II is an excellent choice for those looking for prosumer-level audio conversion software, at a great price. The only real downsides are the lack of a help file, and the fact that you have to install some third-party plugins to access some features.
